The city of Vilnius
The largest city and the capital of the country (541 824 inhabitants). Vilnius was first mentioned in written sources in 1323. The most of inhabitants in the capital are Lithuanians – 57,8 %, other ethnical groups are as follows: Poles – 18,7 %, Russians – 14 %, Belarusians – 4 %, Ukrainians – 1,3 % and Jews – 0,5 % and others – 5 %. Vilnius is the centre of culture and economy, one of the most rapidly developing Lithuanian cities. It is the modern and extremely beautiful city, situated at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers. One of the oldest universities in Europe has been opened in Vilnius since the year of 1579. The Old Town of Vilnius is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city is also famous for Gothic example of St Anne’s Church, built in XV c., Vilnius Cathedral Square, built in Classicism, but also influenced by architectural styles of Gothic and Renaissance as well as Gate of Dawn The Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy chapel. There are 23 abbeys in Vilnius – more than anywhere in Lithuania.
